Like we said earlier, ferrets are friendly and very playful
animals. Even if they get older, they still remain pretty active. However, they like to
sleep a lot. After a few hours of playing he will probably sleep for several
hours. They don't really need other ferrets to be happy unless you are not around
much. They like to go everywhere with you riding on your shoulder or in a bag but
they also love to run around and play a couple of hours a day.
Not everybody loves ferrets because of their own typical
musky smell. Neutering or spaying is absolutely necessary if you intend to keep your
ferret as a pet. Neutering will help to reduce the odor of the male, while spaying will
save the females life when she gets into heat (can die of anemia). You can train your
ferret to use the litter but just keep in mind that ferrets are harder to train than cats.
Most ferrets get along more or less with cats and dogs but
not with birds, lizards, rodents and fish. Make sure you introduce your ferret very slowly
to them. First let your cat or dog and the ferret sniff each other while holding them
both. Repeat this process several times till you are convinced that they are getting used
to each other. Give both animals a bit more freedom every day but keep an eye on them all
the time. Even if you are sure they get along fine, make sure you provide an escape place
for your ferret in case something goes wrong. If the dog is still a puppy or the cat is
still a kitten, introduction will be a lot easier.
Watch out with small children under 6-7. Most of the time
they are too excited and this could make your ferret more than just nervous. This could
lead to injuries to either the ferret or the child.
Ferrets like to scratch carpets, dig into plants, crawl into trash cans,
chew on things ... so if you intend to keep your ferret loose just make sure that you keep
an eye on your ferret and your property.
If your ferret escaped, make sure you find him as soon as possible because
he can't survive very long without your help. Make sure your ferret has a collar (or
harness) with a bell and a name tag with your phone number on it so people will see that
he isn't a wild animal and can give you a call.
If you are wondering whether your ferret is a male or a female it is
probably a female. Many people wonder which gender is the best choice for them. Their
personality is identical, but males are generally larger than females.
Depending on where you buy your ferret, prices will vary
around $100. You will need another $100-$200 for a cage with supplies and around $75 for
his first vaccinations. Many people want to buy a ferret when they are still a baby. A
ferret shouldn't be pulled away from his mother before the age of 8 weeks and the best
thing to do is to wait till the age of 10 weeks. Remember that a baby requires a lot more
care and training than an adult one. An adult ferret could be trained already and tend to
be calmer but can have some bad habits. When you buy one, look for a ferret with clear
eyes, soft coat, healthy whiskers and skin. They should be curious and have an alert
attitude ... in any case : good luck ! |
