When birds are sick they will mask their
illness. This is an instinctive reaction, birds in the wild hide their illnesses to
prevent themselves from being easy prey. Because of this, your bird may be in an
advanced stage before you notice anything happening. A good way to keep track of
this is to keep track of your pets weight. If you notice a drop in weight, take him
into your avian vet for a check-up.
If you see any of the signs listed on the right, contact a vet immediately! Once a
bird shows signs of sickness, it will escalate quickly. Sick birds cannot wait a few
days for treatment.
Other Signs Requiring Vet Care
Bleeding that can not be stopped with
pressure
Bloody stools
Any attacks or mauling from other animals (cats
and dogs can harbor a harmful bacteria that can lead to septicemia or "toxic
shock". A small scratch from a cat can kill a bird within hours.)
Ingestion of harmful or toxic materials (do
not wait for symptoms to.show)
Once again, use common sense when dealing with your bird. If he just
doesn't seem up to par, ease your mind and make an appointment with your vet for a general
check-over. You know your pet better than anybody else and you will be the first to see
signs of illness. Remember, they are good at hiding sickness, and it may not be
noticeable until it has taken a good hold onto your pet.
